    Description

Early 1900's 3 Assorted Pin Back Buttons, 1 Tin & 2 Celluloid. The first is red with a white "highway" symbol in the center, and a navy blue question mark in the middle. The button is in excellent condition; the surface is perfect with no scratches or flaws, and still has its original back paper. The second button is tin with an iron pin in back. It is 13/16 in in diameter. It is navy blue with a "V" for victory in the middle, and the words "Liberty Loan." It represents "liberty bonds" sold during WWI. The third and final button is a tiny little thing with a red heart on a dark background, and with a white circle in the center. It is clean, though it has oxidation in the back. It has no back paper, and we don't know if it ever did. Please see the complete description and all photos.
    Item 483824 ◊ Early 1900's Three (3)
    Assorted
Pin Back Buttons, 1 Tin & 1 Celluloid,
Offered here is an outstanding "Early 1900's Three (3) Assorted Pin Back Buttons, 1 Tin & 2 Celluloid."
    The first button
is celluloid, and 7/8 in. in diameter.  the design is red with a white "highway" symbol in the center, and a navy blue question mark in the middle of that.  Though we aren't certain what the button was created for, we suspect the it suggests, "Which highway will you take on your next adventure."   The button is in excellent condition; the surface is perfect with no scratches or flaws.  It still has its  original back paper, which is still bright, and says, "Bloomfield badge Co., Bloomfield, New Jersey."   The Bloomfield badge Co. is still in business and manufactures badges for law enforcement agencies.
    The second button
is tin with an iron pin in back.  It is 13/16 in in diameter.  It is navy blue with a "V" for victory in the middle, and the words "Liberty Loan" around the periphery.  This button is also in excellent condition, though it does have some small mars on the surface, but no scratches.   In the back there is mild oxidation around there rim, but the pin is clean.  Stamped on the back are the words, "Made by American Artworks Coshocton, Ohio."
    American Art Works
went into business in January 5, 1884, doing printing and advertising novelty items.   It became a well-known company thanks to its popular Coca-Cola trays. The AAW made at least 24 different full-sized Coke trays and vast numbers of advertising novelties. In 1926 The American Art Works alone produced 72 million pieces.
    "Liberty Loan"
    probably refers to the
    Third Liberty Loan Act
was a liberty bond sold during World War I that helped cover the war expenses of the United States. In effect, the bonds were loans from citizens to the US Government which would be repaid with interest in the future.
    The
    third and final button
is a tiny little thing … not quite a 1/2 in. in diameter.  It does have some oxidation in the back, which has stained the surface in the front.   But the design appears to be a red heart on a dark background, and with a white circle in the center.  It has no back paper, and we really know nothing about the background or intended purpose of the button.  It is a celluloid button, and the front shows no scratches or damage other than the staining from the oxidation.   It has no back paper, and we don't know if it ever did.
Three outstanding and fantastic,"Early 1900's Three (3) Assorted Pin Back Buttons, 1 Tin & 2 Celluloid,"  and a great addition to  your button collection.
