Early Tunbridge Ware Love Token ca 1800
The origin of Tunbridge ware is not well documented. Traditionally, it was first made as a sideline by woodworkers in nearby communities like Tonbridge and Speldhurst to be sold to visitors to the Wells; but some believe the earliest ware was bought in from London. However, by the mid-eighteenth century specialist manufacturers had arisen in the locality, notably the Burrows family in Tunbridge Wells (from c.1740) and the Wises at Tonbridge (c.1746-1876). The first Tunbridge ware consisted of undecorated turnery, but in the second half of the eighteenth century decorated wares began to appear, including articles painted in colours on a whitewood background or painted in black to imitate oriental lacquer work. By 1800 print decorated wares had been introduced, often showing views of Tunbridge Wells and popular attractions in the vicinity
Offered for sale is a small patch box with the legend “Remember him who gives this trifle” enclosed in a rope like circle. The edge being hand decorated with circles alternating with concentric semi-circles.
This of course pre-dates the later marquetry decorated ware and as such is of interest to the scholar or advanced collector. Being a love token makes it a perfect gift for a special person.
It measures 1 1/4” tall by 1 1/8” in diameter.
