Andrus Peat is an NFL Pro Bowl offensive tackle for the New Orleans Saints. Peat was considered one of the top prospects in the 2015 NFL Draft and was drafted by the New Orleans Saints with the 13th pick in the 1st Round. He played college football at Stanford. As a high school senior, he was considered the best college football recruit by Sporting News. He committed to Stanford on February 1, 2012.
Peat attended Corona del Sol High School in Tempe, Arizona, where he was a letterman in football, basketball and track. In football, he played as an offensive tackle, leading his team to the Division 1 state championship as a senior. In track & field, Peat competed as a shot putter (top-throw of 45 ft, 5 in) and discus thrower (top-throw of 112 ft, 1 in).
By May 2011, Peat received 38 scholarship offers from college football teams. As of December 2011, Scout.com ranked him as a five-star recruit and the second-best offensive tackle in his class, Rivals.com rates him as a five-star recruit and the third-best offensive tackle in his class, and ESPN graded him out at 83 overall and the 16th-best player in his class. He was considered the best recruit in his class by Sporting News. He committed to Stanford on February 1, 2012. He was offered scholarships from Nebraska,Florida State, USC, Arizona, UCLA, Colorado, LSU, North Carolina, Oregon State, Clemson, Washington, Kansas, Tennessee, Auburn, Arkansas, Arizona State, Florida, Notre Dame, Michigan, Texas, Alabama, Miami, and Oregon.
As a freshman, Peat played in 13 games and averaged 20 snaps per game. From sophomore year, he started the final 27 games of his Stanford career. He was voted a second-team All-America last season (earning first-team honors from SI) and was a semifinalist for the Outland Trophy, presented to the nation’s top offensive lineman. After his junior season, Peat entered the 2015 NFL Draft.
Peat fits the physical mold of a franchise tackle: tall, long arms, carries his weight well. Habitually fires his way to the second (and sometimes even third) level as a road-grader in the run game. He’s extremely quick off the ball and shows impressive awareness when on the move, which helps him pick up free defenders. Peat covers substantial ground on the edge of the line, perhaps most notably when he needs to shuffle wide in pass protection.
On September 20th, 2015, he received his first career NFL start at left guard for the New Orleans Saints in a loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During a week 6 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, Peat suffered a leg injury that would force him out of action for the next 3 games. He finished his rookie campaign with 8 starts and played in 12 games.
Peat had his best performance in 2017 when he was a key part of the offensive line improvement that helped the Saints finish second in yards per rush and sacks allowed. However, the season ended on a sour note as Peat suffered a broken fibula in the wild card-round playoff win over the Carolina Panthers. The versatile lineman has played both the tackle and guard spots in his five years with the Saints after being drafted No. 13 overall in 2015, starting 60 total games. The 26-year-old lineman started 10 games in 2019 as he battled a forearm injury late in the season but returned for the Saints' playoff loss. On December 21st, 2020 Andrus Peat was selected to his 1st Pro Bowl.
