The Le Solei Royale was a French 104 gun ship of the line and was launched in 1669. She remained unused for years till 1688 when the Nine Years War broke out, then the warship was recommissioned with 112 guns. The Soleil Royal was a good sailing ship and her decorations were among the most beautiful and elaborate of all baroque flagships. She was named in honor of the Sun King, Louis XIV who had chosen the emblem of the Sun as his personal symbol. One of the most powerful ships of her day, she met her demise while beached in Cherbourg for repairs after the Battle Of Barfleur. She was attacked by 17 ships, which she managed to repel with artillery fire. Unfortunately a fire ship set her stern on fire and the fire soon reached the powder rooms. There was only one survivor of the 800+ man crew.
